For the most part, when answering this question, the best way to approach the subject is to be as general as possible without seeming like you’re providing a computer generated or overly practiced answer. For instance, if you’re applying for a sales position, you might state that you wish to grow within the field and hopefully have a lot more in–depth knowledge about client interaction. Stating specific goals within a wider answer that boils down to the fact you want to improve is generally a safe bet.
You’re also going to want to emphasize that you wish to learn and grow within the organisation you’re applying to, especially if your resume seems to indicate you’ve had a lot of shorter stints elsewhere. Indicating to your recruiter that you’re excited and enthused about the position you’re applying for, and providing a sense of how exactly you see it contributing to your long-term career growth and ambition, will allow for a structured answer that does not raise any red flags.
Don’t be dishonest when discussing your greater plans with a recruiter: even if you aren’t sure you’ll be within their organisation for the long-haul, frame your answer to express your motivation for applying for a position within the industry in the first place.
Recruiters are looking to hire based on two factors: your qualifications as well as your potential, so demonstrating that you believe there is an opportunity for deeper engagement within this industry will convey your curiosity without putting you in the position of having to deceive anyone.
